Difficulty remembering details of the assault uncertainty about who committed the assault fear of not being believed blaming oneself for being "under the influence" reluctance to report the assault, especially if the rapist was a date or a friend losing faith in one's own judgment feeling unable to trust anyone again These things can make a victim's recovery very difficult. When memories of the assault are hazy or incomplete as a result of being drugged, it is more difficult to gather information that could help prosecute the rapist. Even when going to court is not what the victim wants, unclear memories can feel like a very big block to healing, for example, psilocybin mushrooms identification.
The medical management of the survivor includes treatment of any injuries sustained in the assault, and initial counselling. Emergency contraception and STI prophylaxis should be offered early to survivors of sexual violence. For many women, the trauma of the event may be aggravated and prolonged by fear of pregnancy or infection, and knowing that the risks can be reduced may give immense relief.
I remain unconvinced that verapamil blocks the action of psilocybin, or at least that it completely blocks the action.

Show only 18% remission. These effects are most striking for symptoms of dysmenorrhoea and pelvic pain. All the current treatment regimens appear to be equally effective in terms of symptom relief Wingfield and Healy, 1993 ; . Choice of drug will depend more on side-effects and cost profiles. While relief of symptoms is effective during therapy, there is a gradual return of symptoms in some 3060% of patients by 1 year following therapy. It is not clear how the information on the effect of drugs on endometriosis applies to the management of adenomyosis. There are two considerations. Some patients with adenomyosis also have endometriosis so the drug effects are relevant to patient management. More important is the possibility that women with endometriosis and dysmenorrhoea or menorrhagia may also have adenomyosis or junctional zone hypertrophy Brosens et al., 1995b ; . There has been no adequate explanation of why women with endometriosis outside the uterus have menstrual pain identical in nature to that which normal women have with menstruation, i.e. uterine pain. Hysterectomy performed on women with endometriosis and menstrual symptoms does not often show endometriosis on the surface or growing into the uterus from outside. Sometimes adenomyosis is found after removal of the uterus, and there may be junctional zone hypertrophy JZH ; , which has only recently been recognized, and may not have been reported by histology. It seems likely that women with endometriosis and uterine pain or menorrhagia may have JZH, or experience pain from prostaglandins released from myometrial endometriotic tissue. It is probable that the effects of drugs on women with endometriosis having menstrual symptoms at least partly reflect the effects of these drugs on adenomyosis or JZH. Only prospective studies of women with menstrual symptoms, both with and without endometriosis, having MRI and uterine biopsy, can elucidate the effects of drugs on endometriosis, adenomyosis and JZH.

Who would hang around Village bars on weekends and empty pocketfuls of psilocybin tablets on the counter with a cheery, " Here, try these!" Eric Loeb ran a store with an interesting window display on East 9th Street where four days a week he sold-- openly-- peyote buds shipped in from Arizona, Hoffmann-La Roche mescaline and Light & Co. harmaline and ibogaine. No one heard of Eric's customers getting into trouble either. Tony Cox, still a painter and not yet married to Yoko Ono, pioneered in the use of mescaline for draft-evasion. 400 milligrams taken before his own preinduction physical prompted an angry outburst as an orderly took a stab at his arm to draw blood. Tony roared, "What the fuck do you think you are doing?" and was led into the presence of a psychiatrist with whom he engaged in a protracted discussion of the merits of the New York school of abstract expressionist painting, all the while naked. Tony got his 4F classification, presumably on grounds of schizophrenia, and went on to counsel others liable to military service, using the same approach. When 1 met Peter, he did not know these people, but we discovered that we knew people who knew each other, and a circle of friendships was formed with links continuing down to the present day. Considering how disturbing the whole question of LSD was to become, I find it instructive to recall how tranquil it was then. The expected attitude was casual and vaguely positive. LSD was looked on as a benign substance with a number of not-so-well-explored potential applications, The polemics which succeeded the Harvard furor in 1963 and 1964 were definitely absent. 1963 was the turning point. By mid-1963, Timothy Leary had emerged from obscurity and was about to turn the philanthropic idealism of the time into a scandalous debacle. Tim had a lot of good ideas-- he was incapable of turning off the stream-- which he was impatient to see work. There were prisoner projects, divinity student projects, projects for radicalizing the Psychology Department, for starting a journal, for flooding the world with propaganda extolling the power of the love pill. Bolstering Tim's fierce determination was his belief in his ability to create a political force which would overhaul the composition of the government of the United States, He would have accomplished this aim when enough people had experienced the effect of LSD and undergone the change of conscious state which would permanently affect their outlook for the better-- prejudice giving way to brotherly concern, destructive ego trips to coexistence. Tim's urgent priority was therefore to arrange for as many people to take LSD as possible. His sensibility was basically religious, though the direction he moved in was political. Tim was out to change the State, his strategy being confrontation and his weapona chemical substance which he called a sacrament. He vowed that in ten years a million Americans would win "internal freedom" the Fifth Freedom, freedom to control one's central nervous system.

Umbricht, Daniel, Division of Psychiatric Research, University of Zurich, Zurich, Switzerland In schizophrenia deficient generation of the auditory event-related potential ERP ; mismatch negativity MMN ; and specific deficits in an `AX'-type continuous performance test AX-CPT ; indicate abnormalities in simple and complex working memory systems. In studies in human volunteers we sought to investigate the exact role of the NMDA and 5-HT2A receptors in these cognitive deficits. In two separate placebo-controlled studies we investigated effects of the NMDA antagonist ketamine and the 5-HT2A agonist psilocybin on simple and complex working memory tasks Ketamine study: N 20, Psillcybin N 18 ; . Both drugs induced patterns of performance deficits in AX-CPT performance that were remarkably similar to the deficit pattern in schizophrenia. In contrast, the effects on auditory ERPs differed markedly between the two drugs. Ketamine led to a significant reduction of MMN, but not N1 a sensory ERP manifesting initial stimulus registration. In contrast, psilocybin significantly reduced N1, but not MMN generation. Thus, these compounds differed in the pattern of their overall effects on simple and complex working memory. Their specific effects on MMN and N1 generation most likely represent direct actions at their respective receptor sites, whereas secondary pharmacological effects may be the common mechanism underlying impairments in AX-CPT performance. Both NDMA antagonists and 5-HT2A agonists indeed lead to comparable disruption of neurotransmitter systems downstream to these receptors in particular the glutamate and the dopamine system. Thus, in schizophrenia, dysfunctions of 5-HT2A and NMDA receptor-related neurotransmission may be associated with distinct deficits at the level of preattentive auditory information processing and simple auditory working memory systems. In contrast, such dysfunction may independently lead to similar abnormalities in the dynamics of glutamatergic and dopaminergic systems resulting in comparable deficits in higher cognitive functions such as complex working memory systems.

The type of discomfort the patient suffered initially was primarily nociceptive pain in the lower extremities, which became chronic and intractable. Because of the severity and intractability of the pain, it facilitated a so-called "central sensitization" phenomenon, whereby a prolonged excitation of the dorsal horn causes over-activation and possibly, over expression ; of the NMDA-R. Central sensitization may be conceptualized as a signal amplifier that, over time, is inserted into the pain conducting circuitry. Thereby, previously innocuous stimuli become exaggerated and perceived as painful. Clinically, central sensitization can manifest in a variety of ways. Two that are classic and frequently used in experimental studies are secondary hyperalgesia and wind-up. Secondary hyperalgesia amounts to perception of pain outside the area initially injured; e.g., if one slightly burns the tip of a finger and eventually the entire finger pains, the extension of pain is due to secondary hyperalgesia. This is one clinical manifestation of central sensitization. The wind-up phenomenon consists of repeated transmission of nociceptive stimuli clinically present with protracted pain ; resulting in summation of the stimuli. This leads to exaggeration of pain hyperalgesia ; on repeated exposure to mildly nociceptive, or otherwise innocu.
DISCUSSION 1. Antioxidants were associated with lower cancer risk and total mortality in men but not in women. 2. There was no major effect on ischemic CVD. 3. This trial differs from previous primary prevention trials. It examined lower supplementary ; doses of antioxidants, not pharmacological doses. Only one trial in China ; used a balance of several antioxidants in nutritional doses. It reported a lower incidence of cancer in a nutritionally compromised population. 4. The authors speculate that the difference in outcomes of men vs women might be due to a generally lower intake and plasma concentration of antioxidants especially beta-carotene ; in men. Indeed, baseline serum concentrations were lower in men. 5. The study reinforces the general recommendation of a life-long diversified diet containing an abundance of foods rich in antioxidants.
